Years had passed since the brownie servant and the wisewoman from the hinterland aided Queen Macha in the birth of her youngest son, Ruadhán. The servant from the shadow remained near the child as he grew among his brothers and sister within the royal house of the Great Headland.

Though young, Ruadhán learned quickly from those around him. Yet among his siblings, none stirred his curiosity more than the wayward Prince Fionn. whose restless nature often drew him towards the rugged shore below the cliffs.

One day Fionn fled from the lessons of the Great Hall and wandered down towards the rock base where he encountered the strange selkie upon the outcrop beside her seal companion. When he startled her, she vanished into the dark waters, leaving behind a glimmering piece that later brought her shadow into the royal house by night.

Yet such was his nature Fionn led his younger brother down the cliff many moons later. The elder prince guided Ruadhán along the narrow paths with care where sea winds lashed the stone and the waves struck hard below.

Together they stood upon the rock bed gazing towards the outer sea. The salt-laden breeze and the crashing waters stirred something familiar within Fionn as he pointed towards the outcrop where he had once seen the selkie basking in the pale warmth beside the seals.

As Fionn spoke of the encounter, Ruadhán wandered farther along the mist-veiled shore. There, within the strange drifting vapours, the young prince beheld what others could not.

Beyond the threshold of sea and stone lay a hollow hidden from mortal sight.

Now the princes stood upon the verge of a liminal path.
